Top Ten of 2010

Jeanette's Picks
Frightened Rabbit – The Winter Of Mixed Drinks (Fat Cat Records)
I admittedly have listed to Frightened Rabbit more than any other band this year. This album is a logical progression from Midnight Organ Fight released in 2008, which I also still have on my regular play lists. Bright Eyes/Neva Denova  – One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels: REISSUED (Saddle Creek Records)
This is a reissued version of the loved 2004 release with four new tracks starting off the album. I was going to place this at number 1 but since it is a reissue, I thought it not to be fair. Oh shit, just say it is number 1.Arcade Fire – The Suburbs (Merge)
# 2 tied. RĂ©gine Chassagne = Kate Bush = pretty %$#+ awesome.Ben Folds/Nick Hornby Lonely Avenue (Nonesuch Records)
The musical madness of Ben Folds combined with the literary brilliance of Nick Hornby makes for a diverse and beat biting comboThe Duchess and The Duke Sunrise/Sunset (Hardly Art)
Also one of…

BEN FOLDS AND NICK HONRBY- LONLEY AVENUE              FOUR/FIVE

It has been almost two years since Ben Folds released Way to Normal in 2008. And although the release had chops reaching #11 on US charts, it was nothing near the reach and depth found in his most recent Lonely Avenue--a collaborative project between the literary brilliance of Nick Hornby (High Fidelity, About a Boy) and musical madness of Ben Folds. Rolling Stone gave the album a 2/5 and let that alone be a sign that this album requires a second look.

I wasn't too tired of Ben Fold's music, but let's face it, inspiration in lyrics can be tough and instead of another contrived ballad, this duo is able to be clever, humorous, thoughtful and heartfelt. Ben Folds pulls out strong influence from Elvis Costello; nobody knocked Arcade Fire when they ripped The Boss in Neon Bible  and in this case it is done with just as much passion and raw energy.
The album starts off roaring with 'A Working Day', reminiscent …

  CLINIC - BUBBLEGUM               threepointfive/five
This latest from Clinic is outstanding. The almost 50s/60s de-whoop gone Velvet Underground of the opening track "I'm Aware" and "Milk and Honey" is juxtaposed with heavy post-punk "Lion Tamer" and into my personal fav. "Forever (Demi's Blues)"--a slow racing temporal rendition of a summer love song with steady prolonged drum repetitions. The flow of the album is even transcendental or slightly hypnotic, I recommend.

CFMF 2010 - DEP Highlights

Image
4 Days of 'Folk' in the sun just concluded at the 25th Calgary Folk Music Festival. This year's CFMF highlights are sure to titillate and inspire; from being chastised by musicians and folky fist fights to workshops featuring folk icons and patrons of profession and fame, it's been a wild west ride Calgary.

THURSDAY

Montreal pop icons Stars were finishing their ethereal and optimistic set just as I was arriving. What is unfortunate is that I completely missed ' Library Voices who surely wowed and amazed.

On with the show...

Avett Bros.Taking a  song or two to ease into the folk fest, the Avett Brothers seemed to be relaxed and confident in their 'punkgrass' rhythms and most definitely got the crowd moving. A friend of mine reported seeing a girl no older than 10 or 11 years of age with binoculars singing her heart out to the trio's upbeat and somewhat wholesome set. They projected a strong sense of raw energy and punk sentiments but fell a few feet short …

Walking With Jane!

Image
Since the 1960's, the name Jane Jacobs has meant a lot, to a lot of different people. Most definitely the neighbourhood in New York, Greenwich Village, that surrounded Washington Square where a giant modern freeway was planned to be built as a means to 'revitalize' the urban center. Jacobs rescued the park and several other neighbourhoods over the next 50 years and today her legend lives on in the neighborhoods she helped saved, and the millions she has inspired. Beginning in 2007, a Toronto group started 'Jane Walks' as a way to keep Jacobs' ideas alive. Each year people around the world participate in 'Jane Walks'. They have been organized by private individuals, community associations, and everyone in between as a means to see their neighborhood from an entirely new perspective, that of Jacobs. The intriguing and somewhat ironical element is that Jacobs would never force anyone to see anything her way, and would instead invite an individual to see th…

SXSWOOOO!

Image
DEP host Jeanette was in Austin for SXSW Music, Film, and Interactive Festivals and got to take in some incredible events. Here are some highlights:

Got to catch Angelo Spencer at the Beauty Bar on March 16th, 2010. It was merely by
chance, but I overheard some heavy hitting drums coming from the back alley on my way to the hotel after Wanda Jackson (more to come!) And that is exactly what I found, two little dudes rockin' the stage one on guitar and the other on drums. Turns out Angelo (guitar) has played with the likes of Kimya Dawson (mouldy peaches) and is coming to Calgary this summer for Sled Island. WOOHOO!

The Low Lows
I honestly had never heard of The Low Lows before SXSW, as I am sure is the case for most of you, as they are an Austin based power house of twang, keys, and full horns. But when I read their bio, I basically had to forgo any other plans to ensure I caught them. Here is that breathe taking summary of The Low Lows via SXSW:

Though you wouldn't know it to s…

Tune in for this hot topic discussion. The irony of neighborhood revitaliztionists using Jane Jacobs as a model for urban change, let's get sociable people! Tune in.
