SI 2014 Day Four and Wrap-up w/Jeanette

After three days of running around, I decided to do more. Starting Day Four off at Local 510, to Olympic Plaza, back to Broken City for another excellent salad, and back to Olympic Plaza for Spiritualized and fireworks, Flames Central, and finally the Legion. I also managed to make the Wrap-Up Party at Republik and lunch at Local 510 on Sunday.

DAY FOUR

The Younger Lovers, Village, BA Johnston @Local 510

Based out of California, The Younger Lovers offer a blend of light pop-punk with excellent banter, attitude, and queer-centric themes. Lead singer and guitarist Brontez Purnell's lyrics include not wanting to have sex with a Modest Mouse fan poser in a three way and making sure your ex-boyfriends stay that way, forever.

Village was a nice surprise. Playing what could be the smallest keyboard I have ever seen, singer Jessica Chau leads a day dream mellow garage pop.

BA Johnston has been on the CJSW playlist several times over the years--Ching and I have both enjoyed playing his comedic…

One of the greatest things about Sled is that it is not just about the music. It's about visiting with friends, meeting new ones, good food, laughter, and the occasional torrential down pour--or two.

DAY TWO Block Party, Food, Broken City, Wine-Oh's Comedy, Legion

Block Party @EastVillage

I started the day off with some mini golf at Sled Island's third annual block party in the East Village. A dedicated volunteer guided visitors for 7 hours of mini golf, now that is dedication (photo courtesy of dedicated volunteer)

LuckyMe, STWO, Smalltown DJs and more laid it down for dancers of which there were many.

Supper @BrokenCity
Afterwards, I headed to Broken City for supper. Despite it's ragged punk appearance, Broken City has a decent menu and friendly staff. I ordered a Grilled Veggie Salad that came with freshly pickled red and yellow beets, roasted peppers, zucchini, and mushrooms; a luxurious bed of greens and a light dressing that set my tastebuds and pocket book at ease. Let There Be Sled - SI 2014 Day One w/Jeanette

I always think it is really important to remember the history of the things we love--who was there, who did what, how did it all actually happen. In 2007, Sled Island Festival Founder Zak Pashak decided to start a music and arts festival in Calgary and bring something to the city we had never had or seen before. What is now one of the most special music and arts festivals in Canada and North America is right in the heart of downtown Calgary.

From running the fest. out of his home for years to the slightly mildewed basement of Aida's on 4th street, the festival has evolved and Zak has stepped out of the limelight of planning it--but let's face it, none of us would be Sledding without him. So thank you, Zak Pashak---Festival Founder.

For all the hard working men and women who have helped bring that idea to fruition year after year, and there are many of you, you deserve a thank you as well. Thank you.

Now for Day One.

With wristband and rubber boots I took to the streets, the ominou…
